Academy of Notre Dame Alumna Addresses Class of 2009 at Commencement
As you move beyond the gates, my hope and prayer is that each of you will seek out lives of service and learning – no matter what you choose to do in life, you can live your life in service to God, with integrity and compassion. You have been given an amazing gift at the Academy – not only does the Notre Dame experience instill a desire to be honorable women who serve others, but it provides young women with the skills to live lives of service.

-- Ana Smith Iltis ’92

On Saturday, May 30, 2009, Dr. Ana Smith Iltis, Class of 1992, addressed 87 graduates and their families on the Mansion Lawn with a memorable and passionate commencement speech.

Iltis’s remarks served as guidance for the Class of 2009 graduates, discussing how the morals, values and skills learned at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur could, and should, be applied to everyday life after graduation. Iltis urged the graduates to make good choices, to search for their passions in life, and to be thankful for the opportunities and gifts that they have been given during their time at the Academy.

Iltis also made special mention of the physical changes taking place at the Academy, commenting on her pleasure at seeing the “transformation of the Academy into a 21st century school” and the addition of the Aimee Willard Gymnasium in honor of her “dearly loved and missed” classmate.

A member of the Class of 1992, Iltis completed her PhD in the Department of Philosophy at Rice University with a dissertation entitled, A Philosophical Exploration of the Possibility and Implications of Institutional Moral Agency. She is currently Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics; Associate Editor of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy; and co-editor of the Annals of Bioethics, a book series published by Routledge. She is a member of the Saint Louis University Institutional Review Board. As a co-investigator on the Washington University in St. Louis Clinical and Translational Science Award, she is engaged in research ethics, education, consultation and research.
